Barnes-Jewish part of national effort to improve breast-feeding rates

As part of a national effort to improve breast-feeding rates, Barnes-Jewish Hospital is making major changes in how mothers and babies are cared for, including no longer accepting free formula and keeping babies out of the nursery and in mothers' rooms.
Hospitals were chosen in areas where breast-feeding rates are low. In Missouri last year, 64 percent of new moms attempted to breast-feed, compared to 75 percent nationwide. At Barnes, the rate is 49 percent.
The hospital stay is critical in learning to breast-feed, yet federal studies show that hospital practices that interfere with breast-feeding success are common. Only 143 hospitals and birth centers across the U.S. have adopted the 10 steps, earning the designation as a Baby-Friendly Hospital. Those hospitals report higher breast-feeding rates and fewer economic and racial disparities among nursing mothers.
Other hospitals in Missouri include the University of Missouri Women's and Children's Hospital in Columbia and Truman Medical Center in downtown Kansas City.

She has the Midas touch!

Thursday August 2, 2012 16 year old Gabby Douglas broke into the record books by becoming the first African-American woman to win the all-around gymnastics gold
and the 4th American woman in Olympic history to win women’s all-around.
The humbled Douglas understands the true meaning of sacrifice, something many her age don’t.
“I just want people to know it took a lot," she said. "It took a lot of hard days in the gym and determination, passion and drive. Gold medals are made out of your sweat, blood and tears, and effort in the gym every day, and sacrificing a lot that you have to do.”
Douglas is honored to make history. Her victory also marked the first time the U.S. women have ever won the team gold and the individual all-around gold in the same Olympics. “It’s so meaningful to be the first African-American to win the all-around gold medal in the individual and making the history books is definitely one of the perks,'' she said. "It just feels amazing.”

Ryan Lochte is Grilling ‘em!

27 year team USA swimmer and old world record breaker Ryan Lochte is creating quite the stir, and it’s not due to his recent gold medal he won at the Summer Games in London on Saturday in the 400m individual medley. Lochte is turning heads with his SWAG!
The Rochester, NY born and Port Orange, FL native has been leaving his mark on the poolside by showing everyone how much of a sneaker junky he is and by flashing his customized diamond incrusted grill.

When Lochte won gold in the 400m individual medley, beating Michael Phelps, who finished fourth, he wasn’t able to rock both gold medal and grill on the podium. He was banned from wearing it on the actual medal stand. ESPN's Wayne Drehs reported that "Lochte told me he tried to wear his grill on the podium only to have an Olympics official tell him if he did so he wouldn't get his gold." He however later compromised and instead put  in the his red, white and blue American Flag inspired blinged out teeth for photo ops afterward.
Lochte won silver with the US 4x100m freestyle team, losing out to the French team with a 47.74 split, a full second slower than the French finishing swimmer Yannick Agnel and 0.6s slower than teammate Phelps. Lochte placed fourth in the 200 freestyle race.
